Coaching vs. Therapy

At Balanced with Brit Coaching & Consulting, LLC, I believe that choosing the right type of support is an important part of your personal growth journey. While therapy and coaching can both help individuals create meaningful change, they serve different purposes and operate under different professional standards.

As both a mental health professional and a coach, I maintain clear boundaries between these roles to ensure that clients receive the appropriate services for their unique needs.

Therapy

Therapy is a mental health service designed to help individuals address emotional, psychological, and behavioral concerns that may be affecting their daily lives. Therapy often focuses on healing, symptom reduction, emotional processing, and developing healthier ways of coping with life's challenges. Individuals may seek therapy for concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, substance use, or other mental health conditions.

Therapy may involve exploring past experiences, understanding behavior patterns, processing difficult emotions, and developing strategies to improve overall mental health and well-being. Therapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders and are governed by professional licensing boards, ethical standards, and state regulations. Therapy services may also involve clinical documentation, treatment planning, and risk assessment when necessary.

Coaching

Coaching is a future-focused, goal-oriented partnership designed to help individuals maximize their potential, create meaningful change, and move forward in areas of personal or professional growth. Coaching is not focused on diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. Instead, coaching helps clients gain clarity, build confidence, strengthen accountability, and develop practical strategies to achieve their goals.

Individuals may seek coaching to navigate life transitions, improve self-confidence, develop healthier habits, enhance communication skills, increase motivation, build a business, strengthen leadership abilities, or create greater balance and fulfillment in their lives. Coaching assumes that clients are capable of making decisions for themselves and focuses on helping them identify solutions, overcome obstacles, and take intentional action toward their desired outcomes.

The Legal and Ethical Difference

The most significant distinction between therapy and coaching is that therapy is considered a healthcare service, while coaching is considered a personal and professional development service.

When acting in a therapeutic role, mental health professionals are legally and ethically responsible for assessing mental health concerns, maintaining clinical records, following professional licensing regulations, evaluating safety concerns, and providing treatment within their scope of practice. Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions and must adhere to strict professional and legal standards.

Coaches, on the other hand, do not diagnose mental health conditions, provide psychotherapy, or treat mental illness. Ethical coaching focuses on personal growth, accountability, skill development, and goal achievement. Coaches are expected to operate within their scope of practice and refer clients to licensed mental health professionals when concerns arise that would be better addressed through therapy.

Which Service Is Right for You?

If you are seeking support for emotional healing, trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship challenges, or other mental health concerns, therapy may be the most appropriate service. I can see you at my office location in Lauderdale Lakes, FL, or via Telehealth. We can discuss it at your free consultation.

If you are looking for support with personal growth, confidence building, life transitions, goal achievement, accountability, mindset shifts, leadership development, or creating a vision for your future, coaching may be a better fit.

In some cases, individuals may benefit from both therapy and coaching at different stages of their journey. The goal is always to ensure that you receive the type of support that best meets your needs and helps you move forward in a healthy, empowering, and sustainable way.
